Learn about Airedale Terriers Pet Insurance

Known as “The King of Terriers”, Airedale Terriers are unique for their size, strength and unflagging spirit – they are the largest of all terriers. Airedale is an exceptional hunter, companion, and athlete, as a matter of fact, it is one of the world’s most versatile dog breeds. The breed was developed to catch rats and otters between Aire and Wharfe Rivers.

It is believed that Airedale Terriers was developed in 1853 by crossing a rough-coated black and tan terrier with an Otterhound. The aim was to create a versatile sporting dog that could hunt rats on land and otters in the rivers. The crossbreeding produced a terrier that could swim and scent; this was called Waterside or Bingley Terriers. The dog became a popular sporting terrier within 12 years. Due to their excellent performance in the first dog show in the Aire Valley in 1864, the Waterside or Bingley Terrier was renamed as Airedale Terrier.

Obviously, Airedale Terriers are excellent and versatile dogs with unique and exceptional qualities. To ensure that your dog serves you better, you need to maintain it in the best health condition. Of course, good nutrition and exercise may help but they are not enough. You need to provide the best veterinary care and treatment when necessary. Why Airedale Terriers Pet Insurance Is Important

Cancer is the most common cause of death of Airedale Terriers. A survey carried out by the UK Kennel Club in 2004 shows that 39.5 percent of Airedales die of cancer while only 14 percent die at old age. A US/Canada Health Survey conducted in 2000-2001 also indicates that cancer is the most common cause of death, causing 3 percent of deaths.

Airedale Terriers Pet Insurance News

Before Eddy came for rabies vaccination on a Friday, he was a happy Airedale Terrier but before the weekend was over, he was lethargic, vomiting and limping. The situation was so bad that he was fed water through a big syringe.

The pet owners, Dave MacDonald and his wife Debora, had to take their dog back to the clinic and spent about $15,000 in bills yet the dog was not himself. MacDonald said that the dog would have been put down if they had not gotten pet insurance.

The seven-year-old dog was taken from his local clinic in Orleans to the Alta Vista Animal Hospital where he spent about 12 days in intensive care.

A lot of blood work, x-ray, arthrocentesis and ultra-sound readings were carried out. The dog underwent internal and cardiac exams. Many of his systems were not working well and the blood tests show that he was normal before the inoculation.

The pooch had a fever, pancreatitis, bronchitis, myocarditis and multiple-joint arthritis. A lot of dogs were prescribed including cyclosporin, a steroid and a pain-killer that cost up to $800 a month.

The couple pays $130 a month in pet insurance for their two Airedales. MacDonald and his wife are both disabled and use the dog as quasi service animals. They are on the hook for 20% of the cost of the treatment which is up to $4,000.
