The Right Basic Guaranteed Issue Health Plan

There is an old adage that states “simplicity is the essence of happiness.” There are many instances in life where the simplest of things can satisfy our needs. The same can sometimes be said about certain insurance products. Insurance policies provide us with essential coverage that is not only cost-effective but allows access to the coverage we need, often at lower rates. However, budgetary limitations can sometimes force us to choose insurance products that provide basic coverage. If you are looking for this kind of coverage and are not presently covered by a company-issued health insurance policy, the Basic Blue Choice Plan from Blue Cross may be the right insurance product for you. It provides guaranteed issue health insurance that helps you cover expenses associated with essential health and dental coverage.

What is included in the Plan?

The Basic Blue Choice Plan offers comprehensive health insurance coverage at a lower monthly rate and is available to anyone under 75 years of age. The plan provides coverage for the following essential services:

  • Dental coverage
  • Hospital benefits
  • Out-of-province travel insurance coverage
  • Access to the Blue Cross Assistance Program, which includes partner privileges, discounts and information and prevention services

Best of all, the Basic Blue Choice Plan is a guaranteed issue life insurance product, meaning that you will receive coverage regardless of your health status. Your medical history will not be scrutinized when you apply, nor will you have to pass a health exam.

Can I do add-ons?

The Blue Cross Blue Choice Plan provides basic insurance coverage. However, you can customize your plan to suit your needs with a number of useful add-ons, as described below.

Blue Cross Assistance Program

The Blue Cross Assistance Program, which is a recent addition to the Blue Cross Basic Plan. As a Blue Cross member, you will be granted access to the following services which are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week:

  • Home Support Services available after hospital stays
  • Referrals to medical specialists and health organizations in your vicinity
  • A registered nurse who can address your health-related questions or concerns and provide guidance

Extended Health Benefits

When you receive your plan, you will also be guaranteed an extended health benefit of up to $100,000 overall lifetime maximum and an annual accidental dental care benefits of up to $2,000 with full compensation. You will also receive the following extended benefits, which are reimbursed at 80% up to a predetermined maximum:

  • Orthopaedic shoes (up to $200 annually)
  • Medical equipment and assistive devices
  • Hearing aids (up to $300 every five years)
  • Emergency medical transport by ambulance
  • Nursing care (up to $500 during the first two years, $1,500 in Year 3 and $2,500 in Year 4 and beyond)

Paramedical Services

If you or a covered family member require paramedical services, your benefits payments will be reimbursed at 100% of the cost per person2 for the following services in the table below.

Annual Travel Insurance

A must if you are planning a vacation outside your province, Blue Cross’s Annual Travel Insurance provides you with emergency medical coverage when you need it the most. This benefit provides full compensation in addition to:

  • Worldwide assistance
  • No deductible required
  • Up to $5 million worth of coverage
  • Coverage can be topped up if needed
  • Emergency financial assistance, if necessary
  • Coverage available for an unlimited number of trips annually
  • Coverage for hospital stays and associated medical expenses

Prescription Drugs

Prescription drugs are one of the most common health-related expenses. If you require multiple drugs to help treat an illness, the costs can add up quickly. Blue Cross’s coverage helps you down the road to recovery with the following benefits:

  • No deductible to pay
  • No lifetime maximum
  • Up to $500 of coverage annually
  • Pay Direct Drug Card issued by Blue Cross
  • 70% compensation (applicable only to Ontario Blue Cross)

Note: This benefit is available only up to age 64.

Dental Coverage

If you require basic or major dental procedures, the Blue Cross Basic Plan has you covered. Your dental coverage includes:

  • No deductible to pay
  • Nine-month recall exams
  • Up to $245 of coverage per person annually
  • 70% compensation for basic and/or major dental procedures

Accidental Death

Blue Cross offers an accidental death benefit with the following maximum payouts:

  • $5,000 per child
  • $25,000 per applicant and per spouse

Hospital Benefits

Hospitalization is sometimes a necessary part of the recovery process, but an extended stay can get expensive quickly. Blue Cross’s hospital benefits help you pay for your stay with the following benefits:

  • Coverage for private and semi-private hospital rooms
  • Up to $200 of coverage per day for a maximum of 90 days annually

Note: This benefit is only available to people aged 74 or younger.
