The 2017/18 Advanced Gerontological Education (AGE) Recognition Award with distinction goes to Halton Healthcare for offering confidence in catering for dementia patients, providing staff knowledge and skills. AGE bestowed the award to Halton Healthcare owing to their commitment to the Gentle Persuasive Approach (GPA) education which is an ingenious approach to dementia care education curriculum that employs a person-centered approach.

The Senior Vice President, Clinical Programs and Chief Nursing Executive at Halton Healthcare, Sylvia Rodgers stated that they are proud to receive the award and will continue to employ GPA to their daily practices. She also pointed out that about 500 people have been trained in GPA since 2016; initially, GPA focused only on nursing but it has now been expanded to include other fields like housekeeping staff, diagnostic imaging staff, and unit clerks.

According to Marthat Budgell, a Safer Elder Care Professional Practice Clinician at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, as a result of the training, their staff has been able to understand that tiredness, hunger and pain could cause elderly patients with dementia or delirium to become upset. Thus, using their newly acquired skills, the professionals could approach them confidently and calmly.

The recognition award review panel for the AGE recognized that Halton Healthcare is highly committed to GPA and as a result is a leader in the person-centered care model and has modeled the person-centered care through dementia education.
