According to statistics from Island Health, about 790 people are currently in some form of treatment for opiate addiction which is a 45% increase from 2015, a year before the province declared a public health emergency over the increasing number of fatal overdoses.

Medical Health Officer, Dr. Paul Hasselback, said that the number of those in treatment is increasing across the province but the rate in Nanaimo is faster, about 15%. Hasselback also pointed out that there has been a dramatic increase in accessibility to the treatment. He stated that there has been an intensive level of intervention, support, and public acknowledgment because of the devastation the overdose crisis has had on the city.

Furthermore, there have been a significant amount of naloxone kits in the community which can help save a life to prevent a fatal overdose. According to the B.C. Coroners Service, the number of fatal overdose by the end of June 2018 has significantly gone down to 16 from its value of 24 in June 2017. Thus, Nanaimo is now at the same rate of fatal overdose as it was in 2016 when the crisis was officially declared.
