Kamloops Health News

There was barely zero case of overdose death during the early part of the year, but the reverse is now the case. In September 2018, seven people died of drug overdose in Kamloops. Furthermore, Interior Health Medical Health Officer Dr. Kamran Golmohammadi said in an email that the number in Kamloops is consistent with that for the rest of the province.

According to the email, there was an obvious increase in the number of deaths recorded in Kamloops in September based on the prior information from the BC Coroners report. Furthermore, the number is also consistent with the variability recorded throughout the overdose emergency in the province.

Although we are not able to explain the reason for the recent increase in death, we know that death has been occurring among males and people using drugs throughout the emergency, Dr. Golmohammadi said. Furthermore, fentanyl was detected in over 80% of deaths that occurred in B.C.

Interior Health urges recreational drug users to avoid the use of drugs at the moment but those who choose to use drugs should avoid mixing different drugs, avoid taking drugs while alone, carry a naloxone kit and know when to use it, consider treatment options and follow some other precautions.
