Ethiopia Travel Insurance News

An Ethiopian-born Canadian man, Bashir Makhtal who spent more than 11 years in Ethiopian prison was freed in late April 2018. After a trial that Amnesty International and Makhtal’s lawyer labeled as unfair, Makhtal was sentenced to life in prison for charges related to terrorism.

Canadian officials have worked for years to ensure his release but Gloria Nafziger, a campaigner with Amnesty, said that thousands of political prisoners were released in Ethiopia in the recent month due to the changing political situation.

Nafziger said that it is an optimistic time in Ethiopia for people detained for political reasons. She added that the changing political situation and the new prime minister were probably the reasons for Makhtal’s release.

The release began in early 2018 when the former Prime Minister Hailermariam Desalegn announced that he would drop charges against political prisoners and also close a notorious prison camp to facilitate political dialogue. It continued under the new Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed who was sworn in on April 2, 2018.
