Edmonton Travelers Story

The couple, Dona and John McShane, was devastated and owed $105,000 USD for a five-day stay in Arizona. Their travel medical insurance policy was canceled simply because they made a mistake when filling out their insurance forms. According to John McShane, the said amount is equivalent to their two or three years of living and they can’t afford it.

The couple traveled half of the year, spending much of the time either in a motorhome in the United States or near Tofield, Alta. According to them, they had purchased the insurance from the Alberta Motor Association for years but the coverage was made void just because of an error in interpreting a question about prescription drugs.

Also, they accused Manulife and AMA insurance of painstakingly searching through their records to spot a reason to deny them their claim. John McShane added that the insurance company must have increased the pay for the employee who found the loophole.

McShane also added that the insurer would have searched for any lie in their application form but unfortunately, they did not lie but made a mistake.

However, AMA pointed out that it has no access to the file during the claim process and that it was Manulife, the underwriter, which rejected the claim. However, Rebecca Freiburger, Manulife’s director refused to discuss McShane’s case stating that it was private but added that the company reviews each case in detail and each decision has an appeal process.
