Numerous people gathered on Friday, 13 April 2018 in the community of Old Crow, Yukon to pay tribute to erstwhile Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation Chief Joe Linklater who died the preceding weekend.

Linklater was recently the executive director of the First Nation in Old Crow and he was formerly a chief from 1998 to 2010 and also from 2012 to 2014. Being a small town with a population of 221, Old Crow was shut down most part of the week to mourn Linklater.

Several people attended the funeral. Some flew from Whitehorse by chattered plane while others came from Aklavik, Inuvik, N.W.T., Fort McPherson, and so forth. The memorial service took place in the gym in Chief Zzeh Gittlit School. The funeral procession led from the church to the school where 300 people attended, singing hymns.

According to Bruce Charlie, the First Nation’s current chief, Linklater’s death has had an impact on the entire community. Linklater dedicated his life to the people and the community and championed the education of young people. Also, Robert Bruce, another former chief, said that he would remember Linklater for his contributions to raising awareness of climate change in the North as well as his efforts in ensuring economic development in the community.

According to Bruce, Linklater would always say “we would have to move forward, we cant stop here”. The funeral was followed by a community feast, a moose was killed earlier in the week and was donated for the event.
