Winnipeg Health News

According to the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA), it has made some significant improvements in the system over the past year. The changes reflect the first phase in overhauling the health care system in the province of Manitoba. Among the improvements made was the closure of the Misericordia’s Urgent Care Center and changing the ER at Victoria Hospital to an Urgent Care Center.

The acting Chief Operating Officer at the WHRA, Lori Lamont, pointed out that the improvements made impacted positively on the local health care. Furthermore, Lamont said that the changes involved reinvesting in some of the services and strengthening the services in order to provide an improved quality and timely care to people.

Positive impact of the changes reflected in the reduction in the hospital wait times, even though they fluctuate month to month. There have been record low numbers of people in hospital beds who wait for long-term care and also empty capacity in personal care home system.

One of the additional changes to be made is the closure of emergency departments which include emergency departments at Concordia Hospital. Changes will also be made as to where certain surgeries will be provided and the mental health services will be moved from Seven Oaks and the Grace Hospital to a newly renovated unit at Victoria Hospital before the end of 2018.
