An 18-month old infant in Windsor, Lilah Lamont was diagnosed on February 2017 with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a disease which affects one in 10,000 babies. The disease resulted in the degeneration of her muscles and loss of nerve cells in her spinal cord. After turning blue due to lack of oxygen, doctors said she would not likely live till her second birthday.

However, a drug recently approved by Health Canada has helped her to reach milestones every day. Her mum confirmed that she’s doing absolutely fine and could move her arms and legs and also grasp things.

The drug, known as nursinersen, is trademarked as Spinraza. Nursinersen is the first SMA treatment to be approved in Canada. The drug was developed by Ionis Pharmaceuticals and licensed to Biogen Canada Ltd. In clinical studies that involved over 170 patients, the drug showed positive results.
