Waterloo is an Ontarian city, located in the Regional Municipality of Waterloo. It is situated adjacent Kitchener and it is the smallest of the three cities in the Regional Municipality of Waterloo. Furthermore, the city of Waterloo and Kitchener are jointly referred to as “Twin Cities” or “KW”. The two cities together with Cambridge are known as “Tri-Cities” or “Tri-City”.
The city of Waterloo was established on May 27, 1857; it has a population of 104,986, a land area of 64.02 square kilometers and hence a population density of 1,520.7 per square kilometers. Its metropolitan area has a population of 523,894. This makes Waterloo the 51st most populated city in Canada and its metropolitan area the 10th most populated metropolitan area in Canada.
Waterloo has two universities and a strong knowledge and service-based economy. The city’s largest employers include BlackBerry, Manulife Financial, University of Waterloo, Sun Life Financial, Open Text, and Wilfrid Laurier University. The city has a concentration of several other high tech companies, especially the research and development centers of companies like Oracle, Google, SAP, Shopify, NCR Corporation, Intel, Agfa and so forth.
It is notable for several events and festivals. Some of the notable festivals in the city include Winterloo, Afro Festival, Oktoberfest Parade, Cinematheque Waterloo, Serbian Food Festival, Waterloo Jazz Festival, GO! Music Festival, Tour De Waterloo, Santa Claus Parade, to mention a few.
