Waterloo Health News

During the orientation for the first year students of the University of Waterloo, the students received a mental health first aid kit. The first aid kits, known as PASS kit, which stands for Panic, Anxiety and Stress Support, was developed by a student of the university, Tina Chan.

Chan developed the kit to help students get through mental health problems. She expressed her excitement for the recognition of her product and being able to help people suffering from mental health issues to get through their problem.

The university purchased 7,100 PASS kit in order to make it available to all first-year students. Each of the kits includes a sleeping mask, a squeezable stress bar, an earplug, a pack of gum and a deck of 25 flashcards. It also provides steps for people suffering from symptoms of stress and anxiety. They are compact and small. This means that the students can take them along while on campus.

Chan partnered with KW Habilitation that offers services and supports like employment opportunities to people with disabilities. The partnership provides the manpower Chan needed to package all 7,100 PASS kits.

The manager of community partnership and employment supports at KW Habitation, Will Candish, stated that the partnership accorded them the platform to do good in the community and also find jobs for people who need work. Candish pointed out that it would take more than 60 hours to assemble the 7,100 kits but they are on schedule.
