Vancouver Health News

As a measure to reduce opioid-overdose related death tolls, Vancouver Health has purchased two new drug-checking machines. A Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectrometer had already been purchased by the City of Vancouver and the BC Center on Substance Use last November. The FTIR detects various drug compounds which include fentanyl and its analogues.

The machine costs $50,000 and can check drugs in barely two minutes. Besides, it is a very portable machine. The machine was loaned out to Shambhala Music Festival earlier this year. These two new machines were purchased in partnership with PHS Community Services Society and the Lookout Housing and Health Society. They will be used in various supervised consumption sites and overdose prevention sites in the city.

Dr. Mark Lysyshyn, the Medical Health Officer at VCH, stated that they found out that most drugs are highly contaminated with fentanyl. Up to 80-85% of tested opiods show positive for fentanyl.
