News about Thunder Bay

About 60 public health nurses have been on strike in the district of northwestern Ontario for close to five weeks. However, Ontario Nurse Association officials are hopeful that the renewed talks between the Thunder Bay District Health Unit and the union will culminate to the end of the strike.

According to the association’s labor relations officer, Chris Cormier, the talk was resumed around 10:00 am on Friday morning and they are cautiously optimistic and hopeful that the employer will come to a reasonable settlement with the union members and also for the clients.

After the union requested for someone with more experience, the Ministry of Labor assigned a new mediator to the case earlier in the week. Pam Mancuso, the association’s Region One vice president, indicated that the major point of disagreement between the parties has always been wages. Linda Silas, the president of the Canadian Federation of Nurses Union (CFNU), expressed her optimism that a deal will soon be reached by the two parties.
