Strathcona County Health News

A public clinic offering treatment for opioid dependency opened in Strathcona Community Hospital in late 2017. Alberta Health Services expanded its opioid treatment options in Sherwood Park as part of the commitment of the province to support Albertans and also address harms that come with opioid crisis.

The new clinic is a satellite clinic and it will provide medication-assisted treatment as well as counseling to additional 100 people struggling with opioid use disorder every year. The Associate Minister of Health, Brandy Payne pointed out that it is important to expand the opioid dependency treatment program beyond Edmonton’s urban core in order to save more lives. The new clinic is designed to help people with opioid dependency receive treatment closer to home.

The clinic would be an extension of the opioid treatment center located in downtown Edmonton and it will enable people in the Sherwood Park and its surrounding areas to access the services. About 12 people have died from opioid overdose since January 2016. Furthermore, there have been about 235 opioid-related emergency department visits by patients from the Sherwood Park area.

It will be run by a physician and registered nurse every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The physician and nurse on duty will initiate patients on Suboxone or methadone treatment. The patients will get their daily medications from a Sherwood Park pharmacy and will obtain counseling and support from the addiction and mental health clinic in Strathcona Community Hospital.
