Rottweilers are loyal, confident and loving guardians. Canines in this breed are intelligent but require continuous and extensive socialization to function as a good family companion. In the past, canines in this dog breed were bred for herding livestock and pulling carts with butchered meat to market and so forth but today they serve as police dogs, search and rescue dogs, and guard dogs.

This breed of dog is one of the oldest breeds available. The history of the breed dates back to the Roman Empire. It is thought that the breed is a descendant of ancient Roman drover dogs known for its rugged and dependable nature with guarding instincts and great intelligence. The breed made its way to Germany when the Romans traveled in large numbers across the continent in their quest to conquer Europe. The dogs served the purpose of keeping the herd together and guarding it at night.

The Roman drover dogs found work in the cattle town of Rottweil when the empire collapsed. They earned the name “Rottweiler Metzgerhund” or “Butcher’s Dog of Rottweil” due to their roles of moving herds from pasture to market and protecting their owners and family from bandits. Rottweilers have both good and bad attributes. However, they are also prone to some health problems, especially as they grow old.

Rottweilers Pet Insurance News

A guilty Rottweiler has recently been sentenced to death in the city of Troy due to a recent dog attack. The outcome of the courtroom decision was well expected to settle the backyard horror.

Kevin Waugh, owner of the 2-year-old Rottweiler named Underdog said it was a difficult decision but the right one.

The Rottweiler attacked a seven-year-old boy, his next-door neighbor, on February 14. The child was seriously injured and so the judge had to order the euthanasia of the dog with its owner’s consent.

Waugh said that the boy’s family is upset but he intends to keep the young boy fully in the picture.

A similar occurrence took place in Troy last October involving a mixed-breed Luna. Luna bit a dog and also the dog’s owner who tried to pull them apart. However, the injuries were less severe than the case of Underdog. Initially, there was an order to euthanize the dog but the order was revoked when the owner appealed.

The two incidents show that even animals that are considered to be docile and friendly could behave unpredictably.

Speaking about the incident, Waugh said he can’t particularly fault himself. He always locks the dog behind a gate but unfortunately, he got out. “I didn’t witness any of it, but it was not his nature”, Waugh added.

The Troy City Council voted to change the city rule that required all dogs that bite people to be put down. With the change, judges would have to use their discretion to decide each case depending on the incident.
