Ottawa - Gatineau Auto Insurance News

Several factors affect car insurance rates; however, an insurance company must obtain approval from the Financial Services Commission of Ontario (FSCO) before it can change the rate it offers to Ontario residents.

The FSCO publishes approved rate changes on a quarterly basis. The approved rates for auto insurance companies increased on average by 3.35% in the fourth quarter of 2018.

The approved rates vary widely. For some companies, the rates increased by just 1.65% but some other companies increased their rates by up to 34.87%. In its quarterly statement, FSCO advised consumers to shop around for auto insurance. Rates may vary based on the insurance company’s rating system and claims system even for the same coverage.

On the average, rates increased by 2.23% in the first quarter, 1.11% in the second quarter and 2.06% in the third quarter of 2018. According to FSCO, auto insurance rates are changing because insurance companies are reporting an increase in claims related costs which relates to increases in vehicle repairs costs.

Also, the overall cost of direct compensation and collision claims the insurance companies are required to process may be driven up by the increasing number of distracted driving incidents. Generally, insurance companies usually apply for a rate increase in order to compensate for paying out more claims.
