Markham is a Southern Ontarian City, located in the Regional Municipality of York in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). It is the fourth most populated city in the Greater Toronto Area, besides Toronto, Mississauga, and Brampton; however, it is the most populous city in the York Region and the 16th largest city in Canada.
The name “Markham” was given to the city by John Graves Simcoe, the first Lieutenant-General of Upper Canada. Simcoe named the city after the then Archbishop of York (1776 – 1807), William Markham.
Markham’s economy was mainly driven by the tertiary industry in 2013. However, the largest employer of labor in the city in 2010 was business services, employing up to 22% of Markhamites. Moreover, there are more than 1,000 life sciences and technology companies in the city and currently, IBM is the largest employer of labor in the city. Several international companies have their Canadian headquarters in the city; examples include Hyundai, Toyota Financial Services, Huawei, Honeywell, Motorola, Oracle, Toshiba, Advanced Micro Devices, and many more.
The city is home to a lot of local performing arts such as Markham Youth Theatre, Kindred Spirits Orchestra, Markham Concert Band, Unionville Theatre Company, and Markham Little Theatre. The city’s public library, Markham Public Library consists of 7 branches and more than 600,000 items in collections.
