Longueuil is a city in the Canadian province of Quebec. It is a suburb in Montreal with a population of 239,700, based on the 2016 Canadian population census; this makes it the second largest suburb in Montreal, the fifth most populated city in the province of Quebec and the twentieth most populated in Canada.
The city sits at the south shore of the Saint Lawrence River and it is located just across Montreal. It is the central city of urban agglomeration of Longueuil and the seat of the Montérégie administrative region. The city was founded by Charles Le Moyne in 1657 as a seigneurie. Longueuil became a parish in 1845, a village in 1848, a town in 1874 and a city in 1920.
Longueuil offers a number of jobs in diverse industries, however, a large percentage of its population work in Montreal. Moreover, irrespective of its nearness to Montreal, the city benefits from low property value. One of the major industries that stand out in Longueuil is the aerospace industry. The city is home to the headquarters of the Canadian Space Agency, Pascan Aviation and so forth.
Longueuil’s major cultural event is the Longueuil International Percussion Festival that features 500 musicians and takes place over a period of six days in Old Longueuil. The city also has several attractions which include three natural parks, namely, Parc Marie-Victorin, Parc de la Cite, and Parc Michel-Chartrand. It also has seven arenas and notable places of worship.
