Surrey Health News

The recent legionnaires’ disease outbreak in Surrey forced several stores including Walmart located at the Guildford Town Center mall in the city to close on Friday. However, Walmart reopened Saturday morning.

In a statement made by the Fraser Health Authority on Friday, September 7, 2018, seven cases of the legionnaires’ respiratory infection were confirmed over the past two weeks. The disease-causing bacteria were identified in the store’s cooling towers but the authority said they were not sure the store was the source of the bacteria.

Walmart pointed out that it voluntarily closed its store at Guildford Town Center on Friday after the health authority contacted the store investigating the source of the disease. Walmart Canada’s director of corporate affairs, Anika Malik, pointed out that the store has since reopened but will not sell refrigerated or frozen products until the coolers are turned back on. She further pointed out that the refrigeration unit will remain closed until a public inspection is carried out.
