Saskatoon Auto Insurance News

According to Andrew Cartmell, president of Crown corporation, SGI has spoken with 16 companies about a potential partial sale following legislation passed in April 2017 by the Saskatchewan government which gave room for the corporation’s partial sale.

Cartmell said that no obvious progress has been made even though some interests have been recorded. Joe Hargrave, Crown Investments Corporate Minister said when it comes to exploring a proposal for partial sale, there is no timeline. He added that even after the partial sale, the head office of SGI would remain in the province and also the jobs.

In 2016 – 2017, the Saskatchewan Auto Fund processed close to $800 million in claims. This includes $26.7 million in net storm claims. SGI Canada offers property and casualty insurance in Manitoba, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia.

SGI Canada recorded $65.2 million in profit in 2016-2017, with $738.9 million in premiums, 32.3% of which were written outside Saskatchewan. SGI Canada paid a dividend of $43 million the Crown Investments Corporation of Saskatchewan.

Carla Beck, NDP Crown Investments critic questions the potential partial sale of the Crown to the private sector, citing the growth of SGI in the industry. She said that the provincial government applied a 6% increase by applying the PST to insurance premiums irrespective of the fact that SGI is doing their jobs and keeping rates low in the province.

She added that SGI’s dividend is in peril due to the potential partial sale.
