Guelp Health News

The Guelph Community Health Center (CHC) is applying to make the downtown site a permanent even though the provincial government is still reviewing whether overdose prevention site will continue to operate in the province.

The Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, Christine Elliott, announced late last month that she is on the verge of finalizing her recommendations with respect to the future of supervised consumption services and overdose prevention sites. The government mentioned earlier that it would complete the review by the end of September but the Community Services Minister, Lisa MacLeod, said in early October that the provincial government would need an additional month.

CHC’s executive director, Raechelle Devereaux, said she has chosen to view the delay as a positive sign. According to Devereaux, the delay indicates that the province is committed to a thoroughly reviewing the sites. She also pointed out that a lot of researches are involved. Moreover, she pointed out that all evidence indicates that the services are life-saving and important during crises and would probably require a lot of time to go through.
