News about Delta

Delta Hospice Society is a charitable and non-profit society. It has a contract with the health region to provide 10 palliative care beds for the region. Delta Hospice Society gets 50% of its income from private donations and the rest 50% from the health authority. Fraser Health and activists of medical assistance want the medical assistance in dying (MAiD) service to be provided in every non-denominational, hospice palliative care programs. Janice Strukoff, the administrative leader for the Delta Hospice Society, pointed out that Delta Hospice has become an object to bullying currently taking place in British Columbia by the Fraser Health and MAiD activists.

She pointed out that the care settings for hospice palliative care are designed to manage symptoms, provide comfort and also care for natural death without prolonging or hastening the process. According to her, providing MAiD in such a setting would evoke fear and anxiety on the vulnerable parents who are not ready to die.

According to Nancy Macey, the executive director and founder of the Delta Hospice Society, MAiD could be a distress to staff, volunteers and parents. Moreover, if the principles of palliative care are compromised, groups may not want to stay or work there. She also pointed out that the society is already facing the issue of shortage of professionals and imposing MAiD on the society could even worsen the already bad situation.
