Chatham-Kent Health News

Chatham-Kent Public Health inspector Michael Hatten said that mosquito traps are set up every year in ten locations across the municipality. According to the Public Health unit, mosquitoes collected from traps set in August in three locations: Dresden, northwest Chatham, and Blenheim, tested positive for West Nile virus. The Public Health unit also reported a positive test for mosquitoes in September in the northeast end of Chatham.

According to Hatten, the test began in June and lasted till September, it was designed to monitor for the West Nile virus. This would be the first time in the year the unit had the trap tested positive for the West Nile virus. Hatten added that it is fairly normal for traps to test positive in the municipality.

He explained that there is no doubt that the West Nile virus is here and it is going to be here every year. However, the monitoring is all about determining whether or not it is showing up. Moreover, the fact that it is not showing up does not imply that it is not there. Residents should take precautions whether the indicators show it or not.

The Public Health unit also added that the West Nile virus is transmitted through the bit of a mosquito. The symptoms of the virus may not show for some people and for others, it may show a flu-like symptom such as fatigue, fever, body aches and headaches, severe symptoms may also show. Anyone with a sudden outburst of the symptoms should seek immediate medical attention.
