About Blue Cross Canada

Dating back to 1929, Blue Cross is a non-profit supra-organization comprising of 36 independent companies. Member companies operate as a licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association - with each company servicing its demographic region.

Amidst the financial strains imposed by the Great Depression in the 1930s, hospitals faced significant government funding challenges. Manitoba emerged as a pioneer, becoming the first province in Canada to institute a Blue Cross plan. Visionary medical and business experts acknowledged the significance of prepaid health care plans in ensuring financial stability. This approach's advantages resonated with other provinces, leading to the proliferation of not-for-profit Blue Cross organizations nationwide. Today, these entities offer a wide array of personal and group health coverage options, along with travel and life insurance services.
