News about Barrie

A new men’s sexual health pop-up clinic, George Clinic, opened on June 20 in Barrie. The clinic is a combined effort of the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit and the Gilbert Center. Also, the Canadian Mental Health Association Simcoe County branch provided an enormous help to see it possible.

The executive director of the clinic, Gerry Croteau, said that the clinic is a sexual health clinic for gay men. It was created to provide a safe haven for gay men to obtain the health services they seek. The center will help gay men to easily disclose their sexual encounters without fear of discrimination, stigmatization or any such thing. This clinic would be the first of its kind in the Simcoe Muskoka area.

The clinic was named after the first executive director of the AIDS Community of Simcoe County, George Edward Gilbert. According to Croteau, the clinic was called George to make it in line with the family theme. Furthermore, the clinic was dedicated to gay men because they have a high rate of sexually transmitted infections, such as HIV.
