Yukon Travel Insurance News

The Government of Yukon billed an Ontarian man $18,000 for medevac. The bill serves as a harsh reminder of the limit to his public health insurance coverage.

According to CTV News reports, the Ontarian fell seriously ill on his recent visit to the territory. He was then medevaced to Vancouver and due to the cost of the air ambulance, the Yukon government sent him a huge bill of $18,000.

Marcelle Dube from the Yukon’s health department said that they get some of such medevac stories at least two or three times in a year. Dube pointed out that most people who visit the territory do not know that they are not covered when they have to take an air ambulance trip or in worse case an air medevac trip.

She further pointed out that the government of Yukon will be willing to work out repayment plans with people who owe a large sum of money on ambulance services. However, she further explained that if such people do not agree to work with the government to repay the debt, it might eventually be written off and a collection agent might take over it.

According to Dube, most Canadians are surprised that provinces and territories in Canada do not have any sort of agreement between themselves to take care of medical travels. However, it is the travelers’ obligation to make sure that he or she gets additional coverage for such an occurrence. She said that it is not a standard across the country and she further added that most jurisdiction if not all jurisdictions in Canada do not cover the cost of medevacs or ambulance travels.
