Trois-Rivières is a Quebec city, located in the Mauricie administrative region – the current and traditional administrative region of Quebec. The city is strategically located at the confluence of Saint Lawrence and Saint Maurice rivers. Trois-Rivières is situated in the Quebec City – Windsor Corridor and about half of the distance between Quebec City and Montreal.
Based on the 2016 population census, Trois-Rivières has a city population of 137,026 and a metro population of 151,773. It has a city land area of 333.7 square kilometers and a metro land area of 1,041.15 square kilometers; hence its city and metro population densities are respectively 1,581.2 and 145.8 per square kilometers.
The city was founded on July 4, 1634, by Laviolette, incorporated in 1857 and constituted in 2002. Thus, Trois-Rivières is the oldest industrial city in Canada. The first foundry in the city was established in 1738. From the late 1920s to early 1960s, the city was known as the global capital for the pulp and paper industry. Today, the city is home to technology parks and some renowned industries such as electronics, cabinet making, thermoplastics, metal transformation, food crop production and so forth.
The city of Trois-Rivières is also rich in culture. It hosts the FestiVoix de Trois-Rivières in summer, a music festival that lasts for 10 days and attracts over 300,000 yearly. It also hosts some other interesting events such as Festival International de la Poesie, Festival International Danse Encore, and the MetalFest de Trois-Rivières.
