Trois-Rivières is a Quebec city, located in the Mauricie administrative region – the current and traditional administrative region of Quebec. The city is strategically located at the confluence of Saint Lawrence and Saint Maurice rivers. Trois-Rivières is situated in the Quebec City – Windsor Corridor and about half of the distance between Quebec City and Montreal.

Based on the 2016 population census, Trois-Rivières has a city population of 137,026 and a metro population of 151,773. It has a city land area of 333.7 square kilometers and a metro land area of 1,041.15 square kilometers; hence its city and metro population densities are respectively 1,581.2 and 145.8 per square kilometers.

The city was founded on July 4, 1634, by Laviolette, incorporated in 1857 and constituted in 2002. Thus, Trois-Rivières is the oldest industrial city in Canada. The first foundry in the city was established in 1738. From the late 1920s to early 1960s, the city was known as the global capital for the pulp and paper industry. Today, the city is home to technology parks and some renowned industries such as electronics, cabinet making, thermoplastics, metal transformation, food crop production and so forth.

The city of Trois-Rivières is also rich in culture. It hosts the FestiVoix de Trois-Rivières in summer, a music festival that lasts for 10 days and attracts over 300,000 yearly. It also hosts some other interesting events such as Festival International de la Poesie, Festival International Danse Encore, and the MetalFest de Trois-Rivières.

Several fountains were closed in Trois-Rivières due to the outbreak of legionnaire’s disease in the region. In case of an outbreak of the disease, public health officials search for the source of a spike. Legionnaire’s disease, a type of pneumonia caused by legionella bacteria, often found in stagnant water in rooftop cooling system. The disease does not only cause pneumonia, but it also causes gastrointestinal problems. It is spread through mist such as from an air condition system.

Outbreak of legionnaire’s disease has been reported in several Canadian provinces. A massive outbreak was reported in Quebec City in 2012 which made up to 180 residents of the city sick and caused the death of 14 of them.

The legionnaire outbreak in Trois-Rivières on July 2017 resulted to the hospitalization of eight residents within 2 weeks of breathing in the bacteria. In other to find out the source of the disease, the health officials checked 16 working water cooling systems but they were found negative for the bacteria.
