Pit bull advocates say that they will continue fighting the Ontario government until they change the law that bans the breed.

The legislation did not just ban pit bulls, it also bans Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, American pit bull terrier and any other dog whose physical characteristics or appearance resembles the dogs. The ban is because of the damage that could be inflicted by their bites.

During the 2018 National Pit Bull Awareness Day, people gathered at Parliament Hill hoping that other Ontario cities will follow Ottawa’s footstep.

Ottawa adopts the provincial ban on pit bulls but rather enforces its bylaws that require dog owners to use leashes and to register their dogs, as well as provisions on how to deal with aggressive dogs.

Alix Packard, founder of Ottawa Citizens against Breed Specific Legislation said she will come back as often as she needs to until they understand that dogs should be treated as an individual.

Packard said that public safety is not improved by laws that target certain breeds but rather the laws should be based on the behavior of a dog. She fears that some other breeds might also be taken off the list if this is allowed to go. “It has to be a breed natural responsible ownership focus”, she said.

A spokesperson for the provincial Ministry of the Attorney General said Attorney General Caroline Mulroney has been brief on the files related to her new roles.

Joel Harden, NDP MPP for Ottawa Centre, said she has started a discussion with members of the government and some other parties to enhance collaboration around lifting the ban and is hopeful it can happen.
