Russell Terriers Pet Insurance News

A Toronto dog owner who has pet insurance with Pethealth Inc. for years said that the company was not helpful when she needed them the most.

Referring to a life-saving surgery for her dog, Coco, Lucy Fava said, “I just figured they would cover some of it or at least three-quarter of it”.

She said her dog was diagnosed with a condition called Pyometra, an inflammation of the uterus. Her veterinarian told her that the Pug-Russell Terrier cross had few hours to live. So she proceeded with the surgery.

The cost required to treat and rehabilitate Coco was about $3,500. Fava called Pethealth Inc. following the procedure to discuss payment. She said she believe there should be some coverage.

But Pethealth said she was at fault for the infection because she never had Coco sprayed, and they denied the claim.

In a letter addressed to Fava, Pethealth said that any treatment or surgery relating to the breeding or pregnancy is not available for coverage as per her selected policy terms and conditions. Also, the pet’s condition is considered preventable and related to pregnancy or breeding.

But Fava said that the insurer never informed her that some conditions will not be covered unless she sterilized her pet. “It is personal. When you have a pet, it is up to you if you want to have them sprayed or not”, Fava said.
