Richmond Health News

To address the shortage of doctors and also provide a better support to patients, the B.C government has led an initiative which includes making Richmond to become a pilot site for regional primary care networks. This primary care network involves using websites to find the right health care provider.

Moreover, the provincial government announced new “urgent primary care centers” on Thursday 24th May as an option to BC residents who do not have family doctors and need to visit hospital emergency rooms. According to B.C Premier, John Horgan, the aim is to hire more general practitioners to work in a team with dietitians, pharmacists, social workers, nurses, physiotherapists, mental health professionals, and so forth. These professionals will work as a team in new centers that are open on weekends and evenings.

According to Horgan, several BC residents cannot find a family doctor. In Surrey, about 78,000 do not have a primary care provider, and in Chilliwack, 25% do not have a primary care provider, and generally, in BC, over 780,000, about 17% of BC residents, do not have a family doctor.

Healthcare expenditure accounts for about 40% of the entire provincial annual budget of British Columbia. In B.C’s 2018-2019 annual budget of $53.6 billion, healthcare spending accounted for $21.7 billion. The provincial government expects to spend $128 million annually in the three year plan to improve primary health care in the province.
