Pembroke Welsh Corgis Pet Insurance News

Although there are probably no more purebred Pembroke Welsh Corgis around the Buckingham Palace, the breed has become very popular with Canadians.

Juliana du Pree, a third-generation Canadian Kennel Club-registered Pembroke corgi breeder, said that they have seen a huge increase in popularity in the breed in the last 10 years. Du Pree, whose own dogs served the role of the Queen’s corgis in the Disney movie “The BFG”, also said that they have seen time and time again that the dogs have been associated with her.

According to Du Prince, the Queen obviously played a major role in the breed’s popularity over the years but there is even a greater surge as the younger generation have embraced the breed online.

The Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) pointed out that the number of purebred Pembroke Welsh Corgis registered in Canada has increased from 172 in 2015 to 261 in 2017, over the past three years. The number of litters registered with CKC has increased as well from 34 in 2015 to 55 in 2017.

There are 166 Pembroke Welsh Corgis registered in Edmonton alone but that doesn’t imply they are purebred. Du Pree said they are such a fine breed. Although they look different and are a bit clowny, people seem to be drawn to them because of their cuteness and dwarf legs.

The breed’s meme-worthiness have been caused by their disposition and comical proportions and Google Analytics show that the number of times Canadians have searched for the term “corgi” over the last five years has tripled.
