Ottawa is the capital city of Canada. It is located on the southern part of the Ottawa River and the eastern part of Southern Ontario. According to Ottawa’s public health department, data from 2016 population census indicates that 29% of the population of the city was above 55. Furthermore, the report indicates that the number of seniors in Ottawa will increase to 33% by 2036. This includes 20% of the population that would be 65 at the time and 4% that would be 85.

According to Jean Ho, the program director at the Kanata Chinese Support Center, most seniors in her community face language issues. She said that people struggle to be good with language but they hardly do. According to Ho, this can contribute to social isolation and also pose intimidation when it comes to medical terminology needed to see a doctor or specialist.
