Learn about Newfoundlands Pet Insurance

As their name implies, the Newfoundland dog breed is from Newfoundland. Canines in this breed are large and strong. They were originally used as a working dog to haul wood from the forest and pull nets for fishermen. The dog is well suited both for land and water and it has a sweet temperament, characteristics Newfie breeders say is the most important of all.

Newfies have a high affinity for kids, they are one of the world’s most loved dog breeds. The details of their origin are sketchy and there are several theories on it. While some historians believe that the breed is a cross between Tibetan Mastiff and the extinct American Black Wolf, some others believe that Newfies’ forebears were dogs left by Vikings when they visited the new world and in 1000 A.D. the dogs interbred and formed the Newfoundland. Yet, some other historians believe that the Newfoundland was developed around the 15th and 16th centuries by crossing Portuguese Water Dogs, Pyrenean Sheep Dogs, and Mastiffs.

The Newfoundland is a wonderful dog and generally healthy but they may develop certain health problems as they grow old. The cost of veterinary care is rising and you may spend thousands of dollars out of pocket if you do not get Newfoundlands pet insurance.

A Newfoundland dog named “Miss Andie” with a shiny black coat and easy temperament won best in breed at a prestigious dog show held in New York on February 2018.

The three-and-a-half-year-old dog is based in Ladysmith, British Columbia. The dog performed excellently and gained the favor of the audience and also the judges during the event.

The dog’s owner, Cindy Savory, said it was crazy. “I was hugging all these random strangers”, she added. Doug Savory, the dog’s other owner said he does not get emotional about such things but he did this time because it was a big win for them.

The 62kg pooch is being given royal treatments with grooming, cuddles and walks after returning home.

Miss Andie has won several other awards at some other dog shows but the victory at the Westminster event was special. Dough Savory said, “the show is the show to make it to in North America, so a lot of top dogs end up there”.
