In a recent poll carried out by Ipsos Reid for RBC Insurance in 2017, about 60% of Canadians planned to spend their vacation in Canada during the summer and 40% are planning to travel out of Canada, but only a few of them planned to buy travel insurance.

The poll is said to be accurate within about 2.9% percentage score, 19 times out of 20. It indicates that 50% of Canadians leaving their home province do not plan on getting travel insurance, and 46% of them said they are already covered by their provincial health care and therefore do not need insurance.

Yes, Canadians are covered for out-of-province travel but Stacey Hughes-Brookes, head of travel at RBC Insurance, said that there are gaps. Hughes-Brookes added that the government health care coverage will stop at the provincial border for some pricey services but it will follow you within the province for major medical expenses.

Moreover, in some provinces, the provincial plan does not provide coverage for emergency dental care, X-rays, ambulance transportation, prescription drugs and so forth. She added that some of those expenses could add up to thousands of dollars.

According to Robin Ingle, the president of Ingle International, you may be able to buy supplemental health insurance between $30 and $50 that will provide coverage for $5 million and $10 million if you are a Canadian under 60. Travel insurance usually has gaps. It is wise to read the policy carefully before purchasing. Hughes-Brookes added that travel insurance covers existing condition only when they are considered stable. Moreover, travel insurance does not cover airline overbooking, although some are insurers are looking into it but not yet.
