Medavie Incorporated, a Canadian non-profit medical care insurance company, with its headquarters in Moncton, New Brunswick, operates with the business name Medavie Blue Cross and was founded in 1943. It renamed itself the Blue Cross of Atlantic Canada in 1986. This was later shortened to Atlantic Blue Cross Care or Atlantic Blue Cross in 1999 when it merged with Maritime Medical Care. Later, in 2003 and officially in 2005, a more bilingual name was adopted, giving it its current name.

The company was established in 1943 and had about 2,150 employees as of 2013. Medavie Blue Cross was named as one of Canada’s top 100 employers for the third consecutive time in 2007. This made the health and life insurance company the only non-profit medical organization to achieve this feat.

What are the Different Health Insurance Plans Offered by Medavie Blue Cross

Medavie Blue Cross offers seniors’ health program as well group health plan. Furthermore, the seniors’ health program is designed for residents of New Brunswick aged 65 and older. You can also qualify for the Medavie Blue Cross Seniors’ Prescription Drug Program and Seniors’ Health Program which offer prescription drug coverage and optional health, hospital, and dental benefits.

Furthermore, the group benefits health plan provides an option for the group members to manage chronic diseases. It also offers employee and family assistance.

News about Medavie Blue Cross

Medavie Blue Cross introduced a new Extended Health Care benefit that provides coverage for medical cannabis. This benefit is offered as a stand-alone optional coverage; it is available for plan sponsors and became effective from October 2018.

It is offered as a reimbursement benefit and covers cannabis oil, as well as fresh and dried cannabis. However, other cannabis products and products related to the consumption of cannabis are not eligible for this plan.

It is necessary for plan members to obtain medical cannabis in line with the Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations (ACMPR), and they must also receive pre-authorization in order to qualify for reimbursement under this benefit.

Medavie Blue Cross FAQ

When applying for optional benefits, will I be required to answer any medical questions?

Coverages known as the “Non-Evidence Limit” or NEL do not require you to answer any medical questionnaire to apply. If you apply for the NEL amount or less during your initial enrollment period, you will not be required to answer any medical question. Moreover, you may obtain a greater financial protection by applying for coverage amount above the NEL, however, you will be required to answer some medical questions to complete your application.

What is my NEL amount?

NEL amount is the amount you can apply for without answering any medical question. In a group plan, your employer should communicate this amount to you. The amount may also be included in your optional benefit enrollment package. You can also find it in the rate calculator. You just have to insert the unique access code provided by your employer to get the NEL amount.

How do I file a claim?

You can easily obtain claim forms for any of your life, AD&D, and CI benefits through your group administrator. You can also contact the Medavie Blue Cross by calling 1-800-667-4511. Once you complete your claims form, you should submit it to Medavie Blue Cross by mailing, faxing or scanning it to the address provided on the application claim form. You can also get the completed form across to Medavie Blue Cross through your group administrator.

Can I purchase critical illness coverage for my spouse and children?

You can select appropriate coverage for yourself, your dependents and your spouse. However, if you and your spouse are employed by the same company, you can only be covered once under the plan. Furthermore, if you are already covered as an employee, you cannot be covered as a spouse.
