Employee Benefit News

Manulife Financial Corp. announced in November 2018 that it will start offering group benefits employees access to Vitality, a program that rewards healthy living tracked through a wearable device.

In a new release, insurance giant said that Vitality is a technology-based platform that integrates with virtually every wearable device which includes fitness braces and smartwatches. The platform also motivates and inspires people to make healthy choices.

The platform aims at preventing chronic diseases that are responsible for about 9 in 10 deaths in Canada. At the time of the launch, Vitality has already been included in Manulife’s retail insurance customers. It will now be offered as a part of the group benefits program and over 1.4 million Canadians can access it, Manulife added.

Donna Carbell, senior vice president, group benefits, said in a statement that they believe the program will help to revolutionize the way employees experience benefits in Canada. Donna went further to assert that employers are concerned about the health of their employees because it drives higher productivity, engagement and better overall organizational health.

Four major chronic diseases including respiratory disease, diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular diseases are caused by physical inactivity, smoking, poor eating habits and excessive consumption of alcohol. Data collected in 2017 from Statistics Canada shows that 80 percent of Canadians get less than the recommended 150 minutes of exercise every week.

According to Manulife, Vitality makes use of meaningful actions, motivation-techniques based on science and personal goals to make the healthiest choices the easiest ones. Users get recorded via gift cards and discounts.
