Following a state of emergency declared in St. James Parish as a result of the high rate of violent crime, a military presence was found in Montego Bay, the popular Jamaican tourist destination.

As a result, the Government of Canada is advising Canadians to exercise a high degree of caution when traveling to Jamaica, especially St. James Parish. But Dana Sokoloski, CAA travel consultant, said they have not seen much concern in their office at Regina.

Sokoloski added that the situation has not really affected anything as far as travel is concerned. Most airlines and tour lines are still traveling to Montego Bay which is likely the biggest destination in the Caribbean.

According to a local report, 335 murders were reported in St. James Parish in 2017. Canadians who travel to the location are advised to remain in their resort during the state of emergency and advisory. Also, a curfew was implemented. Sokoloski added that travelers should keep safety in mind while traveling abroad. She added that people will likely be safe if they remained in their resort or tour groups.
