Icelandic Sheepdogs Pet Insurance News

Mariusz Kopieccy, a resident of the city of Konin, is the first Polish person to breed Icelandic Sheepdog. After reading a brochure on various dog breeds, Kopieccy told Morgunblaðið that he became attracted to the breed.

According to Kopieccy, the breed’s personality and characteristics perfectly suit him and his family. Because there was no Icelandic sheepdog breeder in Eastern Europe, it was difficult for the family to get such a dog.

Mariusz knew of only two such dogs in Eastern Europe, one in Poland and the other in Estonia. He finally found a breeder in Holland after searching for a year. Mariusz purchased his first dog, Gratis Grettir, from him.

The family now owns six grown dogs, all purchased in Sweden and Holland. Mariusz also reports that two of his friends learned from him and are now breeding Icelandic Sheepdogs.

Interestingly, all the dogs have Icelandic names provided by friends of Mariusz in Iceland. Mariusz said: “every name has to be provided by the natives”. Some of the names include Afar Hvítur, Áfram, Bjarmi, Dama, Elska Pólska og Engill.

He said that the breed has unique personalities that remind him of a human being in many ways. They have a cheerful temperament and make an excellent family dog. Mariusz three children get along with the dogs very well and he said it is important for children to grow up with dogs.
