After her Havanese dog, Black Jack was killed in traffic while running away from a larger dog, a Victoria woman Jackie Thomas is suing a doggie daycare.

Thomas said she didn’t want her Black Jack to get lonely while she is at work, so she hired Camrick PurrFetch Petcare to take care of her dog. But the business owner called her in a panic a year into their contract and told her that Black Jack is gone.

The documents filed in the court show that the incident took place when the dog and its handler went for a walk near a busy Esquimalt road. The lawsuit alleges that there was a large dog in a nearby car that belongs to another walker. Black Jack was distressed but the handler did not notice.

The lawsuit further claimed that the Black Jack quickly freed itself from the leash and ran away from the large dog onto a busy road. Thomas previously told the doggie daycare that Black Jack is afraid of big dogs. She said she was traumatized and in shock.

Although insurance covered the cost of the dog as well as the hospital bill, Thomas still wants compensation for the loss of her pet as well as the mental distress the loss has caused her. She said Black Jack has a big personality and is her friend.
