Max, a Toronto-based nine-year-old Goldendoodle (a Golden Retriever-Poodle cross), is a pretty, sweet and family-friendly canine. The three-legged dog is part of the war against human cancer. Max’s owner, Andrea Horan said she knew Max was a good dog when he was just two.

Andrea recalled that Max was chewing a bone when her niece walked by and picked up the bone. Max just looked up and sighed. However, the sweet dog started to limp back in the spring of 2018. Andrea thought at first that he had hurt his paw or pulled something but it didn’t get better after several days. The situation progressively got worse and she had to take him to the vet.

Max was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a bone cancer common in dogs. The vet gave dismissal options: put him down or amputate his legs and then proceed with chemotherapy. But irrespective of the expensive treatment, Max only had less than a year to live because osteosarcoma would probably come back.

Andrea chose to put him down because the alternative was not attractive. Before choosing this option, he did some research by searching for clinical trials that were testing treatments for osteosarcoma. She found one – the Mona Campbell Center for Animal Cancer, a part of the Ontario Veterinary College situated at the University of Guelph.
