Gatineau, officially known as Ville de Gatineau, is a city in the Canadian province of Quebec, located in the western part of the province. After, Montreal, Quebec City, and Laval, Gatineau is the largest city in the province. The city is located across Ottawa, on the national bank of the Ottawa River. The city has a population of 276,245 and a metro population of 332,057, based on the 2016 population census. It has a land area of 381.3 square kilometers and a population density of 773.7 per square kilometer.
Ville de Gatineau comprises several offices of the provincial and federal government. This is primarily because of its closeness to Ottawa and also its status as the major town of the Outaouasis region of Quebec. Most jobs in Gatineau are either from the federal government or the construction and service industries. Thus, the city operates an undiversified economy, especially when compared to Ottawa, its neighboring city. However, there is a recent move to modernize its economy.
Gatineau has interesting recreational activities. There are basically two important tourist attractions in the city; these include the Casino du Lac-Leamy and the Canadian Museum of History. The city also comprises several parks; the parks are usually resting spaces or well-gardened playgrounds but some others are wild green areas such as the Lac Beauchamp Park.
