Julie Mainardi, a Montreal dog owner could not afford the costly medical treatment for her 11-week-old puppy, Marley, and so she had to surrender the dog.

After becoming sick on December 25, 2018, Marley was diagnosed with a highly contagious disease that affected the intestinal tracts, Parvo. One of the emergency vet clinics open in Montreal during the holidays, DMV Veterinary Center, told her that the treatment will cost about $7,500.

When she couldn’t pay, the vet staff gave her an option to legally give up the bullmastiff-malamute mix which will then be put up for adoption. “I didn’t realize how bad it was. I didn’t think I was going to be walking out the door with a blanket and not my puppy”, Mainardi said.

A fundraising campaign was created by the SPCA West to help cover the cost of the puppy’s treatment. The campaign raised $6,000 on December 29.

Dr. Enid Stiles, a veterinarian, and owner of Sherwood Park Animal Hospital said that Mainardi received a high estimate for a Parvo treatment. Stiles said that’s a worst case scenario. “We don’t often see them a lot more than that, but we do see cases that come to that much”, he said.

Stiles also added that it is at the discretion of DMV to return the dog to its original owner even though it is devastating to the pet owner. “They have legally transferred ownership over to the hospital or the rescue agency and so there is no legal ground to get that dog or cat back”, he said.
