Niyongere was born in Bhutan. Thereafter, he lived in a refugee camp in Nepal for 23 years. A lot of people who move from Bhutan to Canada have waited for long in refugee camps.

Jillian Wiig from Flexibility Learning Systems said they have students that are mostly from Bhutan and they have been in refugee camps for about 20 years on the average.

Sandrea Mintz who works with Lethbridge Family Services said that refugees are not just people who come from other countries and sometimes the need for help is much closer to home. Lethbridge organizers said that they want all refugees to know that they have a safe and supportive place to call home, irrespective of how far they have travelled.
