Canada shares a commercial and bilateral relationship with Algeria. In 2017, Algeria was Canada’s largest bilateral trading partner in Africa and the 42nd in the world. Over 60 Canadian companies do business in Algeria in several industries and sectors.

Also, Algeria is the fourth largest source of immigrants to Quebec. About 1,200 Algerians were studying in Canada and about 67,000 Algerian diasporas resided in Montreal in 2016.

Canadians travel to Algerians for several purposes including trade, tourism, business and so forth. Most Canadians forget to get Algerian travel insurance coverage before they travel to the North African country. However, without the right coverage, you could be on the hook for thousands of dollars in medical expenses if an unexpected illness or accident occurs while abroad.

Megda Belkacemi, the daughter of Khaled Belkacemi, one of the victims of the mosque attack that took place in the Quebec City, says that her family moved to Canada because her parent chose it as a place of peace and stability.

Megda, 29, was the oldest of 17 children. She recalled how her parents left Algeria due to violence in the country, in search of a better life. According to Megda, her parents moved to Canada about 30 years ago to pursue their graduate studies. She and her brother Amir were born in Canada.

Her parents chose to return to Algeria for work in 1992 but it was a time of intense terrorism, she noted. Algerian elites were targeted by the terrorists. These mainly include universities, journalists, writers and so forth. She noted that the rector of her parent’s university was assassinated the day her father had a meeting with him.

Megda added that she grew up in Sainte-Genevieve near Cap-Rouge and had a peaceful childhood but their lives turned upside down on the evening of January 29, 2017, when her father was killed in the shooting.
