Ajax Health News

Ontario Shores Center or Mental Health Sciences identified six inspiring individuals across the Durham Region as its “Ambassador of Hope”.

The hospital announced the names on October 23, together with its 100-year brand during an event held to commence a one-year celebration to denote its one-century of delivering mental health care to the community. The president and CEO of Ontario Shores, Karim Mamdani, pointed out that the center will look back at their journey and the impact they have made in the community and the lives of mentally ill people over the next 12 months.

The hospital was established in 1911 as a result of architect James Govan’s effort in consulting government officials, psychiatrists and physicians to develop a design for a new mental health facility on the shores of Lake Ontario. The center became a convalescent home for wounded veterans during the First World War – then it was known as the Ontario Military Hospital.

The ambassadors chosen by the center were selected from about 50 people who applied last summer. These include family members, patients, retired staff, staff members, community leaders, and volunteers. The successful candidates include Jordon Beenen from Oshawa, Ian Hakes from Brooklin, Kristie Jennings from Whitby, Candice McAlister from Bowmanville, and Barbara Murray from Ajax.
