Afghan Hounds Pet Insurance News

For much of the late 20th century, Sunny Shay was a household name in Afghan Hounds. Her tightly bred Grandeur line was known throughout the world. Shay produced some of the most influential dogs such as the Intl. Ch. Shirkhan of Grandeur which was the first hound of any breed to win Best in Show at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show.

Some high-profile dog breeders got their dog education by visiting Shay. Shay’s Best in Show win with his Afghan Hound Shirkhan at Westminster was a turning point in the sport of dogs.

The late Anne Rogers Clark, an iconic judge, said she uses Shirkhan as a standard when judging other Afghan Hounds. Clark recalled of the incident as she said: “I was standing in the hall that ran around the amphitheater when Sunny walked up to the steps to the ring with Shirkhan,” Shirkhan wasn’t looking at the ring when he reached the top stair, he was looking through the ring, through the concrete wall and out into Central Park, Clark added.
